The initial confrontation between Williams and Brown was over jay walking.

Freddie Gray was arrested for having a pocket knife that MIGHT have been a millimeter too long.
Regardless, when you take someone into custody – you assume complete responsibility for their well being.
If Gray was throwing himself arround – it was the polices responsibility to prevent him from harming himself.
If they did not want that responsibility, they should not have arrested him on ludicrous charges.

Martin was shot by a Hispanic – Zimmerman who was not a police officer

Eric Garner was “arrested” for selling loose cigarettes – an offense that normally results in a citation.
His “Resisting arrest” consisted of being loud and angry and refusing to stand still and drop to the ground as ordered.
He was not “violent”, and harmed no one. The officers should have written him a summons and left.

Regardless, again you arrest someone – you take responsibility for them.
There is no “fragile victim” defense to either crimes or torts.

The police are expected to deal with violent criminals. Homeless people, people with mental health issues, suicidal people. … without killing them or having them kill themselves.

The minimum wage sets the level of skills one must have to get a job. The higher the minimum wage is the less likely you are to get a job if you are poorly educated, untrained, unskilled with no work experience.

Prior to the enactment of MW laws in this country the unemployment rates for blacks and whites were very nearly the same – after the rates for blacks are double or more those of whites.

Two major groups supported the early minimum wage – Jim Crow southerners, and white Unions,
the arguments made were overtly racist.

Police stops are dangerous. Maybe they are more dangerous for blacks – the statistics are less clear on that, the stops of blacks, the shooting of blacks, the arrests of blacks, are all directly proportional to the percent of crimes committed by blacks AND to the reports of crimes by blacks. Regardless, they are dangerous for all of us. Getting shot would be a bad outcome, but there are innumerable other possibilities. Whatever you tell an officer during an encounter can later be used against you. Stops for speeding, tail lights etc. are pretexts.
Traffic stops are one of the primary ways that the police have of investigating crime more broadly. A police stop is an opportunity for the officer to look through your car. If there are leaves on the floor – you could face a drug arrest. Sometimes tests come back wrong – and you could face a false conviction. If you do not show the officer the respect he thinks he deserves – and most of us are not in the mood to show the police respect when they have pulled us over for some minor traffic issue, the officer can escalate the confrontation. You could face aggravated assault charges – because that is what shoving a police officer is. You say the officer shoved you, you did not shove him ?
Your word against his.

Most officers are just doing their job. They are as annoyed by the stop as you are, they hope to find nothing. But most is not all. Regardless a traffic stop is one of the more dangerous tasks a police officer performs, so you can expect their adrenalin levels to be very high.
So at a police stop everyone is amped on adrenalin, our fight or flight instincts are kicked in and those options are unavailable. We are all expected to remain civil and rational when our hormones are driving us away from civil and rational.

Regardless, if you have not had the same talk about police stops with your children that you beleive that black families must have with theirs – you have done your familiy a disservice.

The minimum wage was the invention of labor unions to prevent less educated and less skilled workers (blacks, mostly) from undercutting higher union wages. The higher the minimum wage is raised (read: “living wage”) the more it hurts the least educated, least skilled and least experienced (teen) workers, whose labor doesn’t provide enough value or generate enough revenue to justify paying the minimum. They probably just won’t be hired. It’s not the business owners and managers who are racist–it’s the policy.

If he really wanted to show his solidarity with the downtrodden black, he would move his family out of lily white Chevy Chase and into Southeast DC.

I agree that the minimum wage is racist. I don’t think the drug war is overtly racist… but it definitely impacts low income people much more than wealthy folks. I also agree that expanding the EITC would help.

I don’t think that would fix the crime problem. People don’t commit crime because they are poor. People turn to crime because they don’t believe in the system and hate the rest of society. They feel opressed and that justifies criminal behavior in their minds. All people are like this. This is also why “broken windows” policing is so effective.

But for the media and BLM to make each police tragedy into the sole national focus by repeating it over and over and over again perpetuates the fiction in the minds of blacks that the police are racist killers. It undermines public safety. It is so destructive to the national fabric.

And if black lives truly matter–which they absolutely do–can we please focus on the factors that contribute to the 99.4% of violent male black deaths that clearly aren’t tragic mistakes on the part of authorities? Of course, doing that is a lot harder than whining about police tactics; it forces us to ask sobering questions about the breakdown of the family and community structure. Sorry, but there are no easy answers.

Time to look yourself in the mirror and ask if you’re part of the solution.

People need freedom from racist laws like minimum wage and the idiotic war on drugs, combined with some simplified form of safety net like an expanded EITC. That would immediately improve the lives of millions of people of all races, genders and classes.

I am a white person and I stand for justice. I also stand for waiting for enough facts to come in before adding my voice to the conversation.
